Evangelist Evangelist = a "publisher of glad tidings;" a missionary preacher of the gospel (Eph. 4:11). This title is applied to Philip (Acts 21:8), who appears to have gone from city to city preaching the word (Acts 8:4, 40). Judging from the case of Philip, evangelists had neither the authority of an apostle, nor the gift of prophecy, nor the responsibility of pastoral supervision over a portion of the flock. They were itinerant preachers, having it as their special function to carry the gospel to places where it was previously unknown. The writers of the four Gospels are known as the Evangelists. | Eph 4:11 11It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, Eph 4:11 (NKJV) 11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, Eph 4:11 (KJV) 11And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; Eph 4:11 (AMP) 11And His gifts were [varied; He Himself appointed and gave men to us] some to be apostles (special messengers), some prophets (inspired preachers and expounders), some evangelists (preachers of the Gospel, traveling missionaries), some pastors (shepherds of His flock) and teachers. | | Acts 21:8 8Leaving the next day, we reached Caesarea and stayed at the house of Philip the evangelist, one of the Seven Acts 21:8 (AMP) 8On the morrow we left there and came to Caesarea; and we went into the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the Seven [first deacons], and stayed with him. Acts 8:4 4Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. Acts 8:4 (NKJV) 4 Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word. Acts 8:4 (AMP) 4Now those who were scattered abroad went about [through the land from place to place] preaching the glad tidings, the Word [the doctrine concerning the attainment through Christ of salvation in the kingdom of God]. Acts 8:40 40Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea. Acts 8:40 (NKJV) 40 But Philip was found at Azotus. And passing through, he preached in all the cities till he came to Caesarea.6 Acts 8:40 (AMP) 40But Philip was found at Azotus, and passing on he preached the good news (Gospel) to all the towns until he reached Caesarea. | |
