Aug 23 - Gifts of the Spirit - part 1

Gifts of the Spirit

Note:  I have read through 1 Cor 14.  After understanding the content, I think in order to study about Gifts of the Spirit, it is important to proceed in the following order:

1)  1 Cor 12….Gifts of the Spirit

2)  1 Cor 13….Love (Charity)

3)  1 Cor 14….Tongues vs Prophecy

1 Cor 12:8-10

8To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.

1 Cor 12:8-10  (NKJV)

8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same[b] Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

1 Cor 12:8-10  (KJV)

8For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

9To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

10To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

Gifts of the Spirit as per 1 Cor 12 are:

1)      Word of wisdom  (message of wisdom);

2)      Word of knowledge  (message of knowledge);

3)      Faith;

4)      Healing;

5)      Working of miracles  (miraculous power);

6)      Prophecy;

7)      Discerning of spirits  (distinguishing between spirits);

8)      Diverse kinds of tongues  (different kinds of tongues);

9)      Interpretation of tongues.

Note:  Gifts of healing.  Remember that the healing is given by God.

1 Cor 12:4-7,11

4There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.

7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

11All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

1 Cor 12:4-7,11  (KJV)

4Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

5And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

6And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

7But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

11But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

·               All the Gifts of the Spirit are from Holy Spirit.

·               There are diverse Gifts; altogether 9 types of Gifts of the Spirit.

·               Although there are 9 Gifts of the Spirit (as per 1 Cor 12), the order of the gifts may not signify the importance/priority of the gifts.  Just a listing only (as far as 1 Cor 12 is concerned).  However, in 1 Cor 14, some Gifts are said to be preferred, i.e. Gifts which edify the church.

·               God has given the Gifts of the Spirit for the benefit (profit) to all.

·               It is God the Holy Spirit who determines who to be given which Gift(s) of the Spirit.

1 Cor 12:27-28

27Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues.

1 Cor 12:27-28  (KJV)

27Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

 28And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

1 Cor 12:27-28  (NJV)

27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. 28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.

Church functions as per 1 Cor 12 are as follows:

1)      Apostles,

2)      Prophets,

3)      Teachers,

4)      Miracles (workers of miracles),

5)      Gifts of healings (gift of healing),

6)      Gifts of help  (those able to help others),

7)      Gifts of government  (those with gifts of administration),

8)      Gifts of diversities of tongues  (varieties of tongues; those speaking in different kinds of tongues).

Together with various functions and gifts, the church becomes complete.

Take note for each function, we may need more than 1 person.

The church is like a body requiring various parts to function properly,

1 Cor 12:14-20

14Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 16And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

·               The church is like a body requiring various parts to function properly,

·               Each part has its specific function(s).

Next:  study each of the Gifts of the Spirt, and each of the functions of the church.
